why does the main page reset after about 5secs deleting any info already typed

I open firefox on my desktop and begin typing in the search field and then 5secs later the screen flashes and resets the page with nothing on it. I cannot seem to find anything in options to stop it.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Overall, it sound like Firefox hasn't been loaded completely before you start typing.
That has happened to me quite frequently, especially for the first launch each day when Firefox looks to the Mozilla servers as part of the daily update check routine. Subsequent launches of Firefox don't present that 'delay'.
