Thunderbird wont start except in safe mode and then too takes about 10 minutes or more. There was a similar question asked I see in 2015 and the solution was to disable lightning. However, since I cannot start Thunderbird except in "safe" mode I cannot access Lightning via the "tools-add-ons-extensions" route as it shows no "lighting add-on" I have had to keep Thunderbird open all the time as a result so I can have quick access to my e-mails. Any fix would be greatly appreciated.

Lighting is not any more an add-on (The Lightning calendar add-on is now integrated into Thunderbird" https://www-stage.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/78.0/releasenotes/ ) so I think you should try to disable (in safe-mode) each add-on one by one till you find the one which is creating you this issue.

Keeping Thunderbird open is not a bad thing ;)

Did you find which add-on is causing the problem?
