how to make threaded / unthreaded setting persist over time and across all folders?

I can't seem to make the threaded / unthreaded option persist in my settings. I can set my inbox to unthreaded, but the next time I open Thunderbird, conversations are threaded again. Is there a global setting somewhere that I'm missing? Thx -- EtK
