How to set Return Receipt email language or edit Return Receipt template
Hi! I'm using Thunderbird with English interface in non-English-speaking country - it's easier for me. Recently, I've found Return Receipt messages from me (if I got e-mail with RR request) written only in English. I would like to add the same words, "This is a Return Receipt for the mail that you sent to [skip]. Note: This Return Receipt only acknowledges that the message was displayed on the recipient's computer. There is no guarantee that the recipient has read or understood the message contents." in that message in local language. I've searched this site. I've checked settings. I've searched c: drive for words "the mail that you sent to" trying to find RR template. Nothing... Any ideas?

OK, I've found and tested the solution. For Windows. Guess it's not so much different for other OS. You have to close Thunderbird and find file C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\<something>.default-release\extensions\langpack-en-US@thunderbird.mozilla.org.xpi - it's regular ZIP archive file with XPI extension (that's why I haven't found it at first try). Find inside file \chrome\en-US\locale\en-US\messenger\msgmdn.properties - it's regular text file. Open it with Notepad++ and add everything you want in any language. Do not delete or modify any keywords or markup. You may insert newline in text as "\n" without quotes. Make sure the modified file found its place in archive. Yes, this is not ideal solution, but it works. Yes, there is a possibility XPI file will be overwritten at next Thunderbird update - just keep your copy in a safe place.

Return Receipt actions are located:
- Menu icon > Settings > General
- Under 'Reading & Display' section
- click on 'Return Receipt' button
- choose settings
- click on 'OK'
There is no 'Return Receipt' template in any folder nor in Preferences.
re :There is no guarantee that the recipient has read or understood the message contents. If you have set up the Return Receipt as automatic then it will send Return Receipt upon download automatically as per instructions. The 'Return Receipt' in this case is acknowledging receiving the email, so sender knows that the email did arrive in your Inbox. 'Return Receipt' is not an acknowledgement of the recipient reading the email which may occur at any time after recieving the email.
You could change the settings so it asks you instead. Then after reading you can click on the option to send a Return Receipt.

Toad-Hall, are you OK?
Thunderbird will use the language version you installed which in your case is English. Thunderbird has no ability of determining what language has been used in an email sent to you. It just displays what it receives and uses the language version you downloaded as the language to use in all menus, content etc etc,
You could create your own Return Receipt by using Message Filters with a Template email, but it will not auto contain your email address, so you would need to include it in the template email or deliberately omit that data.
Here is an example: Create the template email.
- click on 'Write'
- Enter 'Subject' as 'Return Receipt'
- enter the text
This is a Return Receipt for the mail that you sent to and type your email address. Note: This Return Receipt only acknowledges that the message was displayed on the recipient's computer. There is no guarantee that the recipient has read or understood the message contents.
then you could also include same message in an alternative language eg: Italian Questa è una ricevuta di ritorno per la posta che hai inviato a and typeyour email address. Nota: questa ricevuta di ritorno riconosce solo che il messaggio è stato visualizzato sul computer del destinatario. Non vi è alcuna garanzia che il destinatario abbia letto o compreso il contenuto del messaggio.
File > Save as > Template It gets saved in the Templates folder.
Create the Message Filter
- Menu icon > Tools > Message Filter
- Filters for your account email address
- Click on 'New'
- Filter Name : Return Receipt
- Apply filter when 'Getting New Mail'
- Select 'Filter after Junk Classification' (to prevent sending to anything auto marked as junk)
- Select 'Match any of the following'
- 'Disposition-Notification-To' and 'contains' and type .com
- click on the small + sign to get another line and repeat:
- 'Disposition-Notification-To' and 'contains' and type .co.uk
Repeat for any other email addresses you normally receive by entering the last part of email address as indicated above examples.
The alternative to using :
- 'Disposition-Notification-To' and 'contains' and type .com
IF you only want to reply to very specific email addresses who send emails to you on a regular basis, then you need to enter that email address. So if a known sender called 'A' sends an email to you with a Return Receipt request then you want to respond. In which case use:
- 'Disposition-Notification-To' and 'contains' and type the email address of that person
Otherwise, if sender wants Return Receipt and they have an email address ending in .com, that reply will get sent.
Perform these actions:
- 'Reply with Template' then select the template called 'Return Receipts' from the drop down options.
As you have already created it, you should see the 'subject' of the template listed.
- Click on 'OK
- Check the 'Enabled' filter checkbox is selected.
Note filters operate in the order listed, so if you have a filter above and it moves an email, then that email will not have the second filter applied.
- Check the filter log is also enabled - click on 'Filter Log'
- check the 'Enable the filter log' checkbox is selected.
This is useful for checking what has occurred.
Note any emails which get this type of reply will show as 'replied to' in Message List. So you should see the
