when I start firefox my options (settings) get set back to the defaults and I am re-directed to the firefox start page instead of my home page. version 3.6.8

This problem started after upgrading to 3.6.8. It first looked as if Firefox is looking to update some plug-ins, despite setting it not to look for updates. I have the same plug-ins for a long time (MS drm, ad-block +, Java and script . I wonder if locking the prefs would help, or make it read only. Thank you for any help - I am a firebox addict.
