hello jim, can you replicate this behaviour when you launch firefox in safe mode once?
Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems
please also update your plugins (some of them are out-dated & have security vulnerabilities that are actively exploited on the web).
Try to open a new window to check if the location bar works in that window.
You can also check for problems with the localstore.rdf file.
