Firefox 44.0 install killed my ThunderBird weblinks. How can I revive them?

Recently-updated ThunderBird email weblinks worked fine until I installed FireFox44.0 . But now, when email links are clicked, FF won't launch. Or if it's already running; it won't open another tab.

Has FF44 installation caused some internal settings to be corrupted? If so, can someone lead me through changing things back; or do I have to go back to previous FF ?

Strangely, the email links are now working again: intermittent gremlin fluences are so frustrating! I'm finding it harder to type with my fingers permanently crossed!
