Using XP sp3, i have current Adobe Reader v. 11.0.08. I need to unlock the Adobe Reader plug-in.

You locked Adobe Reader. For XP xp3, 11.0.08 is the current version.

So you have stopped me from reading PDF files in my browser.

As the user I should have permission to override locked plug-ins if I choose to do so. I need user permission to activate Adobe Reader.

This is hurting my productivity as design and development engineer.

You need to update Adobe Reader to 11.0.17, and that should automatically update the plugin in Firefox.

For some reason, Adobe doesn't give the latest version of Reader XI on the main download page. Instead, inside Adobe Reader, go to

Help > Check for Updates

to get caught up.

If that fails and you need to download a patch file, use Adobe's release note here:

Hi csc.larry, I am not using an XP at present, so I can not be certain what versions of Adobe it may be compatible with. My XP will be SP3 and as far as I am aware able to use 11.0.08 but I don't think it meets system requirements for later Adobe versions.

Adobe Reader Version Version 2015.017.20050 requires at least Windows 7 see https://helpx.adobe.com/reader/system-requirements.html

I have not yet worked out whether you can unblock 11.0.08 but modern Firefox versions read PDF files natively thti probably the better and safer option.

The title of that is slightly misleading as of course Firefox will save the file if you wish.

I am not even sure if we even differentiate soft and hard blocks for plugins so the risky plugin may be useable if you follow the instructions in this article

Does any of that help solve your issues ?

N.B. I will remove your email address because this is a public forum and partially indexed by search engines. It will only attract spam. If the email address was used to register and you opted to follow posts by email that will continue to function .

Updated to Adobe Reader 11.0.17. Firefox Shows Adobe Reader plug-in up to date. But still does not open PDF files in Firefox. Instead prompts for location to save PDF file.

You may need to change settings for how Firefox handles that type of content. If things are too mucked up the settings can be totally reset. Rather than try to cover all possibilities it is probably easier if you read and try suggestions in each of these help articles in this order

  1. Use Adobe Reader to view PDF files in Firefox
  2. View PDF files using Firefox’s built-in viewer_if-pdf-files-are-downloaded-instead-of-displayed-try-these-solutions
  3. https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/cant-view-pdf-web.html

Just as a footnote, if your problems are limited to one or a few sites, it could be the sites. There are at least two ways sites bypass your preference:

(1) Some sites send an extra header with a file specifying disposition "attachment" which instructs Firefox not to open the content in a tab but to download it.

(2) Some sites send a non-standard content type header -- instead of application/pdf, something like application/download, for example -- to force Firefox to handle the file as something new rather than following your preference for PDFs.
