As that is default behavior, perhaps you could expand on what you have said so someone might understand where you are coming from.

When I posted the problem, when I deleted an email, it would not show up in the trash folder: Come to find out, I had two trash folders but only one was showing: My wife found the other one and it had the deleted emails in it: I deleted the empty trash folder: now the deleted emails show up in the trash folder:
Thanks to all Harold Gosnell

I've had a Gmail account for a long time, and I've been using Thunderbird for a long time. I've watched the space my Gmail account uses on Google's servers increase steadily, until it reached 5 gb. I've finally figured out what was happening. When I "delete" a message in Thunderbird, it does not go into Gmail's "Trash." I've been experimenting today, using Thunderbird and watching what happens on Gmail's servers through Firefox. When I hit "Delete" on Thunderbird, the message disappears from Inbox but remains under Gmail's "All Mail" label and never gets into Gmail's "Trash" label, so it's never deleted from my Gmail account on Google's servers. I accumulated almost 200,000 emails under "All Mail" that I didn't want. Now that I've figured out how to get rid of those stored messages, the storage space used is only 0.5 gb. So, how do I get Thunderbird to correctly assign Google's "Trash" label?
Ah ha! I kept flipping settings on both Thunderbird and in Google. I couldn't see Gmail's "Trash" label in Thunderbird, and I just thought that was the way it was supposed to be. Now I can see it, I've got Thunderbird moving deleted messages there, and cleaning up Trash on exit. No more storage bloat! OTOH, I shouldn't have had to do all this fiddling to get it to work.
