Thunderbird duplicates, then triplicates then quads... etc until I have hundreds of duplicate messages in the Sent folder. This only happens with 4 messages. I delete the dups, compact folders, close but when I open Thunderbird at least half dozen dups of these four messages appear. I deleted them multiple times, deleted them from trash, still not help. The do not appear in my email server. The put copies in sent folder under user account settings is unchecked. HELP very frustrating.

Check your email filters setup, perhaps there is a condition that causes a loop of copying emails.

Copy the mails to another folder delete everything in the mail folder and then compact.

You could copy the mails back from another folder after the compact

Copied all "Sent" mail to another folder. Deleted everything in the Sent folder. Compacted mail boxes - all mail boxes. Moved mail that was copied in first step back to the sent mail folder. Closed machine. Reopened the next day and all the duplicates, triplicates, were back... So as good as the suggestion it didn't work. Thank you for the thoughts

Another place you could look at is email forwarding options, perhaps you or someone with access to the account has setup forwarding conditions at the server level? This could also explain the loop in copying, etc.
