When using Linux to connect to networks, sometimes I need to download a certificate, so I can use it when trying to connect to that network. Firefox absolutely refuses to download .crt files. Firefox will only ever give me the message "this certificate is already installed". I had to download Opera so I could download the certificate so I could connect to my university's network. I can't change what Firefox does with .crt files in Preferences>General>Applications because it doesn't try to download it, and I don't have the option to add something.

If you get "this certificate is already installed" then Firefox tries to install the certificate in the Certificate Manager. This error usually means that you already have a certificate with this name installed.

Did you try "Save Link As" in the right-click context menu instead to save the certificate ?

"Save link as" in my university's specific context always tried to save an .html file.
