Newsgroup login problem
I am using (and have been for years) Eternal-September for newsgroups but I had a crash and have had to start over. E-S requires a username and password for login in encrypted mode but I cannot force TB to present me with the login box request, and the login is not in the passwords list. It works perfectly in open (unencrypted) mode. I am also doing the 14 day trial of News.Individual.Net which also requires login - which was requested, supplied, and is in the passwords list. NIN works perfectly.

Hmm if I recall correctly, and it is years since I used NNTP with any password at all the request dialog is a username, password combo very similar what used to be common for FTP. Does you anti virus have any password vault? It is possible it mistakes the dialog for a wen credential and stores it outside Thunderbird.
My understanding is Thunderbird attempt to connect to the server, it challenges with a username/ password request that is then displayed to the user.
If the challenge is not coming back, the anti virus is the first port of call looking for a why, followed by the firewall blocking the relevant port.
Port 119 for not encrypted (SSL) communication and Port 563 for encrypted communication are the registered ports that you would be dealing with.
<Might> have been my fault. I had it set to port 567 instead of 563!
Now I'm having difficulties with news.individual.net!! I can download and see newsgroup posts, but it won't let me send a contribution to any NG whether in clear or encrypted.
Got me foxed this has!

Some news providers require that you make a separate request to post articles, use a real email address, not post HTML or binaries etc.
