Is there a way to just get rid of the bookmarks toolbar altogether, or is there a way to keep it from popping open every time I accidentally add a bookmark to it instead of my bookmarks menu? It's really kind of useless when you have more than a few bookmarks..

If you press the menu button in Firefox and select Customize, there will be a Toolbars option at the bottom of the screen, that should allow you to turn off the Bookmark Toolbar. See Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars.
