Raspberry Pi 4B Raspberry Pi OS -- Fully updated OS. Firefox 78.9.0esr (32-bit) -- Latest and greatest for Raspberry Pi OS.

Some videos I am getting no sound. I try the effected videos in Chromium for Raspberry Pi OS and it works fine. I read about a possible fix and tried disabling hardware acceleration with no effect. I also blew out all the cookies,. history and stored site data. Each attempt closing and reopening Firefox. Same thing on the same videos, no sound in Firefox but fine in Chromium.

Any tips or pointers?

In my research on this issue I found those links and that information does not apply to a Linux/Debian environment like what is used in Raspberry Pi OS. I have checked the available volume levels. With that out of the way...

To further my troubleshooting I tried two different sound sources. An external USB sound device and the one built into the Raspberry Pi 4B. On both devices the sound did not play on those videos but worked fine on others.

I then tried the latest Ubuntu distro (fully updated) with Firefox 87.0. Trying the videos again, they worked perfectly. I also tried the problem videos on my Windows 10 system and Chromebook, through a Linux virtual system to run Firefox. The videos played perfectly.

This seems to be an ongoing issue with Firefox (in various versions) considering it has spanned several different operating systems (Windows, Linux, etc) and hasn't been addressed by Mozilla.

If anyone has some more ideas I am open to hear them in helps of tracking down the culprit to this wide ranging problem.

Did you check what audio codec is used for those videos in case you are missing audio components ?

You can also check the Web Console.

Oh good idea cor-el!

I checked the codecs across Linux (RasPi OS & Ubuntu), Windows 10 and Chrome. The troubled videos all use the same codec as the other videos I watched that worked fine. In my searching, sadly, there isn't any codec libraries available for Raspberry Pi OS aside from those you happen to have the programming skill to make yourself.

I will try to find some contact with Raspberry Pi OS and bounce this off them as well.

Interesting turn.

I forgot that VLC can open network streams. I opened one of the problem videos and it played fine through VLC! So it seems to be focused on something in Firefox causing the problem.

Update.

Not sure on what to say here. I tried a 64-bit beta image of Raspberry Pi OS. I went to one of the problem videos and it plays fine now. I am at a total loss on what to say where the problem lies. I thought it was a Firefox issue since the problem videos could be streamed in VLC.

Trying the beta 64-bit OS seems to counter all that troubleshooting, somewhat starting things from scratch. As of this very second things seem to be working fine. Can't say this problem is solved once and for all.
