I want to send a message and the send button says "send later". What does that mean? and how much later is "later"?

One possibility would be that Thunderbird is offline. You can check that at File>offline.
Thank you David. What I finally did is turn off thunderbird and turn it on again. It asked me if I wanted to send unsent messages, I said yes and the message went. Also, that "send message later" was gone.!
