Updated Firefox to 3.6.17 and then downloaded 4.0, and when installing got message that previous version was newer.
I updated Firefox to the latest version 3.6.17 on my Mac, and then saw that there was a version 4 available. So I downloaded it and and tried to install it by dragging the Firefox Icon to the Apps folder. A message appeared asking if I wanted to replace the newer version already there with this older version. Is 3.6.17 newer than 4? What is the latest for Mac?

Mozilla are currently maintaining 3 different release versions of Firefox, with the latest versions being 3.5.19, 3.6.17 and 4.0.1
Depending on when the files were created, you can get a version of Firefox 3.6 being reported as newer than a version of Firefox 4. If you want to use Firefox 4 you should install Firefox 4.0.1
So 4.0.1 is really the latest version for Mac, and has newer features? Will I lose all the bookmarks and addons that I have in 3.6.17?
Firefox 4 will use the same user data that Firefox 3.6 is currently using, you will have your bookmarks, passwords, cookies and other user data.
Firefox 4.0 was completely unusable (see other posts on FF 4) due to it's excessive memory usage.
So I was forced to roll back to 3.6.16 (the previous version). Since then 3.6.16 has been upgraded to 3.6.17 - so I can see how that may have looked like a more recent version than FF 4.0.
However, my experience of FF 4.o was so bad, I'm staying on 3.6.17 until the very last minute. If FF 4 isn't sorted by the time they can 3.6.17, sorry Mozilla, I'm gone - you used to make great products, but seem to have forgotten how.
