Make sure that the Location Bar is not set to "Nothing":
- Tools > Options > Privacy > Location Bar: When using the location bar, suggest: History, Bookmarks, History and Bookmarks
This can also be caused by a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
Thanks cor-el it was not the problem. i found the answer here - Right click the search engine (Google) icon in the search box and uncheck "Show Suggestions. Problem fixed.
