profile cannot be loaded, profile manager cannot be accessed, firefox not working
This is somewhat similar to other listed profile manager problems but none of the answers worked for me. OS is Win 8-64 bit. Have 2 user accounts. Admin and Limited. In Admin, Firefox works, can access Profile Manager, there is this profile.ini etc. Everything ok.
But in the Limited account, can not access Firefox. When clicked, it says 'Your Firefox profile can not be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible'. Cannot access Profile Manager "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p. Gives the same error message (Firefox not running).
Tried copying files in the Admin in to Limited. But the error message is same.
Uninstalled and installed using the Limited Account (supplying Admin password), no result.
Please help me.
Thank you for your time.

Hi Cor-el, ideato, Thanks for the support. When I entered the command it gave me the error "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect"
I tried the command in different ways, but the result were similar.
When I tried it in Admin account, it worked. But not in Limited account.
Anyway, after long period of time, I managed to solve the problem (well sort of).
This is what I did; 1. Uninstalled Firefox from Windows Add/Remove programs 2. Manually deleted all the folders that were there for Firefox. 3. Created new Limited account ("Test") 4. Log in to that account and then log off. 5. Installed Firefox again using Admin account.
Thats it. Inside this "Test" (Limited account), Firefox is working fine. Sadly, inside "Limited" Firefox is still inaccessible. But it does not matter. What I need is working Firefox in a limited account. I can delete "Limited" and rename "Test" as "Limited".
Thank you for your continuous support. I learned many things from your instructions!
Happy problem solving!!!
Thanks and best regards!!!

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems. See "Creating a profile":

Profile Backup and Restore
Hi Jayakumars, Thank you for responding to my question. But, my problem is, I can not access profile manager (in my Limited account) as I stated earlier. Without accessing profile manager, I can not create any profiles.
Firefox closed, Run - Firefox.exe -p gives the same error "your Firefox profile cannot be loaded....."
I do not need to backup as I was unable to use it in a single time.
I tried removing (completely) and re-installing Firefox. but failed.
Thanks again for your time.
Did you try to delete the profiles.ini file?
There should be one there because otherwise you wouldn't get this error.
Hi, cor-el, thank you for replying.
There is no profiles.ini file inside the C:\Users\Limited\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox folder. (But, Firefox folder is there). However, there is this Crash Reports folder inside it. It contains this file "InstallTime20130511120803" having a value "1372856252"
(Hidden files are set to be viewed)
In the Admin account (where Mozilla can be used, Profile Manager can be accessed), there is this profiles.ini file. That is, inside C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox there are Crash Reports (folder), Profiles (folder) and profiles.ini file
I copied these Profiles (folder) and profiles.ini file from Admin account to Limited account and tried (in the Limited account), not working.
I deleted these Firefox folders from both accounts and tried, not working.
All the time, error message is the same.
I am so used to this Firefox and now I cannot access it. Tired of using Internet Explorer. Hope to use Firefox soon.
Thank you for your support.
Try to run chkdsk.exe in a CMD.exe window to check for disk errors.
Note that Windows hides some file extensions by default.
Among them are .html and .ini and .js and .txt, so you may only see a name without file extension.
You can see the real file type if you open the Properties via the right-click context menu
No disk errors
No Profiles (folder or a file), with or without extension visible.
Inside C:\Users\Limited\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox, only Crash Reports (folder) is visible.
However, when Right click this C:\Users\Limited\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox, folder and go to properties, it says, it contains 2 files and 1 folder
Type: File folder Location: C:\Users\Limited\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox Size: 20 Bytes Size on disk: 8.00KB (8,192 Bytes) Contains: 2 Files, 1 Folders Attributes: Read Only
Then I use cmd in run, dir in this folder. It shows only Crash Reports (folder)
Then I use attrib -R -H -S *.*. But no result
It seems that this file is there, but can not be accessed or viewed. What shall I do?
Thank you for your time.
Hi Cor-el, I am still struggling. It seems that this problem is due to access limitations as I can access Firefox inside the 'admin' account but cannot from the 'limited' account.
I also tried to install Google Crome, the result is same. It works inside the 'admin' but gives errors in 'limited' account.
I have very little knowledge about win 8. Any ideas to solve this? Thanks for your support.
Did you check the permissions for the Firefox folder, profiles.ini and the actual profile folder?
- C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox
You can try to delete the Mozilla folder and let Firefox create a new folder structure.
Note that Windows shows a green block in the Read-only box for folders, but not a real check-mark.
Only a check mark in the Read-only box means that a folder or file is Read-only.
Windows doesn't check all the files in a folder so instead displays a green block to indicate that it is not sure.
You need to look at each file individually to see if any are read-only.
Easiest to do that is to make the Attributes visible in "View > Details" mode: Choose Details in Windows Explorer.
Hi Cor-el, thanks again.
Problem is these folders/files are not visible in Limited to check the permissions. There are no Profiles (directory) or profiles.ini (file) inside C:\Users\Limited\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox
I tried with the Firefox folder, Right Click, Properties, General. It showed Black box (not Green) inside Read only. I unchecked it, Applied. Then go inside that folder and come back and check again, it is as before. That is Read Only. It seems that this Attribute cannot be changed. (I tried this while inside Admin account).
In Windows explorer, View, Details for Firefox (folder), Attribute is D. Inside it is only Crash Reports (folder) is visible and its Attribute is D. No other directories or folders.
I also deleted the Mozilla folder. But no result. When double clicked Mozilla, it gives the same error message.
Is there anything I can do? Please help.
Hello jcbala
see IF we can create a test profile in the location you want, type the command:
"C:\Users\Limited\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\firefox.exe" -CreateProfile test
check if the path is correct (in the specific location)
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Command_line_arguments
thank you
The profile should be in that location in \AppData\Roaming\.
The Firefox program should still be in the default location in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\" folder
- "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -CreateProfile default

cor-el is correct, the command in my above reply is INcorrect

Did you try to remove the Mozilla Folder in the Limited account?
- C:\Users\Limited\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla
You can do a disk check with the chkdsk.exe program.
If you run the chkdsk.exe program from a cmd.exe Command window then you can read the response from the chkdsk.exe program.
Open a cmd.exe window: Start > Run: cmd.exe <press Enter>
At the command prompt (>) type or Copy&Paste: chkdsk.exe /f /r <press Enter> (put a space before /f and /r)
