I keep being asked to upgrade to Firefox 29, and when I try to do this I am told that I am using the latest version

Everyday I get a message that says I should upgrade to Firefox 29, but when I go to do this I am told that I am using the latest version, even though in "About Firefox" I see that I am on version 24. Can you please explain this to me and tell me whether I should download a fresh version.

Thanks, Ruben Abrams

Hi,

There's a few possible reasons for that.
1) about:config still has the pref to an old version 2) You have a user.js file active on Firefox.

Just to be sure, visit the below page and tell me what it says for the label

Suggestion 1
Follow these steps to see if your user agent is messed up.

  1. Navigate to about:config via Address Bar
  2. Click the button that says, "I'll be careful, I promse!"
  3. At the top of this page, search for general.useragent
  4. Try to reset the following if they exist (If general.useragent prefs are bold (user set) then you can right-click that pref and choose Reset.):
  • general.useragent.extra.firefox
  • general.useragent.extra.productName - where productName can be the name of some third party software (e.g. microsoftdotnet),
  • general.useragent.locale
  • general.useragent.override
  • general.useragent.security

Suggestion 2
You can delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release. You can get to the profile folder below:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory > Show Folder

or

  • Go to about:support and click Show Folder next to Profile Directory.
