In Thunderbird (against an imap server), it's too easy to accidentally click on one of the titles in the top of the message summary window and change the sort order from the usual desired order (Sort by date, ascending, threaded). It's too hard to change it back - it takes several traversals through the View|SortBy menu. It should be easy.

Could you add a little shortcut icon to reset the window sort order to date/ascending/threaded (maybe beside the pin icon "Keep filters applied when switching folders").

This applies to Windows and Linux versions 36.0 and most of the previous versions.

Thanks!

As you said it can easily be changed by selecting the column header. So why not use them? So if you accidentally click on 'Date' column header and all is reversed from ABC to CBA, then click on Date column header again to change back.

You do not have to use the Sort by method - that is just the method via the toolbar., you can use the various column headers.

Are you also aware of the 'Apply columns to' and 'Reset to default' see image below.

The first column shown in Toad's second picture is the Threaded column. So 2 or 3 clicks on headers would be all it would take. Then maybe a little target practice with your mouse so you quit hitting the column header in the first place.
