I have a new gmail account. My OS is Windows 7. I am using the Firefox browser.I don't understand how my Firefox account relates to Thunderbird. My msn.com account will expire May1,2015. Gmail says their "Fetchit" app will transfer my emails and addresses from MSN to gmail, but it doesn't always do that because it doesn't always have the right settings. They advise me to call MSN and find out how to do the transfer. I will call MSN but it is not likely that they will be helpful.

Does Thunderbird have a solution for this problem? I successfully downloaded Thunderbird, but then deleted it when I learned that importing my emails was not going to happen automatically. Many others will have the same problem. My gmail address is sbonomi34@gmail.com. My msn address is sbonomi@msn.com. Thank you, SBG

You can install both your accounts in Thunderbird and then simply move messages from one to the other. You then have the choice to continue using Thunderbird, or to switch using Gmail via its own website.

Address Books are a bit harder to transfer. I'd suggest you go to the msn account, in your browser, and seek options to download or export your address book there. I expect it will offer CSV as an option, and vcard format is a possibilty. Both of these can be imported into Thunderbird and into Gmail.
