How can I make a link in an email open a new tab rather than a open a window behind my Home Page?
When I click a link in an email it opens in a window behind my Home Page. I find it annoying to have to click view and then click the window for the desired link. In Firefox preferences I have ticked "Open new windows in a new tab instead" but the problem persists.

Hello,
Sorry to hear that What happens if you start firefox in safemode?
'If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
- Click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
- On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
- On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
- On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

This should do the trick for you.
Thanks for your reply. I followed your suggestion but the problem persists. In reading some other posts on this problem there were comments that your suggested solution worked previously but now no longer works.

Thank you for your helpful advice. I followed the steps in the Troubleshooting article you suggested and discovered that extension Adblock Plus 2.6.13 was the cause of my problem. I have disabled it and will try to find another suitable ad-blocking extension.
I appreciate your perseverance in helping me find a solution.
Hello.
You are very very welcome.
How ever there should not be a need to permanently remove add block plus. While in your inbox press the adblock plus addon in your toolbar, and choose the first DISABLE option.
For ex
when on gmail it would say disable on mail.google.com
that way you can still use it but have it black listed form running on your inbox.
See the screen shot if your confused.
Load the web page. After the page is loaded, click the down arrow next to the AdBlock icon. Now select Disable on <web site>.

Thank you Sir.Mayo. Your suggestion worked for my web based mail account but not for my ISP's mail account.
Thank you also FredMcD. Your suggestion worked for an individual website, but over time I would have to repeat the process many times for all the links emailed to my ISP mail account.
It's now a matter of evaluating the advantages of ad blocking vs the inconvenience of a window opening behind my Home Page. I'll be voting for ad blocking.
In case you open the link via an external application you can look at this pref:
- browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external
If this pref has the default value -1 then browser.link.open_newwindow is used. The meaning of the value of the browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external is the same as of browser.link.open_newwindow
- 1:current tab; 2:new window; 3:new tab;
I re-set the value from -1 to 3 for browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external. Now, if I open a link while Firefox is closed, Firefox opens and the link opens a window behind my Home Page. But if Firefox is open to my Home Page when I open the link, the link opens in a new tab.
