Recently, email messages lose attachments once I click on them, then the attachment icon disappears.
This is a new problem. After I click on an incoming message with an attachment, the message opens, but the attachment is gone. If I close the message, the attachment icon is gone, too. How can I retrieve the attachments? Thanks for your help!

Sometimes there are embedded images which Thunderbird doesn't seem able to recognize as such until it displays the messages, after which point it correctly removes the attachment indicator.
A picture is encoded in the same way regardless of whether it is sent as an attachment or shown within the message body, hence advising the user of a possible attachment is relevant if the encoded material may be considered potentially harmful.
Is an embedded image a common feature in these messages with supposedly missing attachments?
