I go to my credit card web account, and I type in my login name and my password, and Firefox refuses to save it. I can save it with any other login -- "Would you like Firefox to save this login for xxx.com?" In fact, my wife can save her login on her account with the same credit card website. That particular website is not listed as an "exception" in my security preferences (in fact, I have no exceptions listed). What's going on?

We're talking FF 58.0.2 on Mac OS 10.11.6.

Make sure you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode (Always use Private Browsing mode; Never Remember History).

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • remove checkmark: [ ] "Always use Private Browsing mode"

Um, what makes you think I was in Private Browsing mode? I said I could save all the other logins.

Hi,

There are a number of possible causes, as described in this article :

Thank you. Yes, I saw that, but none of those explanations apply. As I said, I have no exceptions set up, I am not using private browsing, and this website happily saves login information for other users on my machine. Also, I am not using any independent Password Manager.

In case you are using Firefox Password Manager, would you please take a look at this article (if you haven't already .... ) :

Now, that is interesting that special care needs to be taken for multiple accounts on one site. Like my wife's account and my account on this particular website. So when her account is logged in the Password Manager, the Password Manager isn't letting me log my account. Why?

Now, in the instructions you pointed to in "Managing multiple accounts for a site", I'm supposed to cntl-click on hte username field. What username field? Where? In the Password Manager? That doesn't do anything. These instructions are unfortunately not very clear.

This is smelling useful. Please advise.

In that article, under Managing multiple accounts for a site there's an image, showing the contect menu they are talking about. It will show after you've clicked the 'username' field - which is the field where you usually fill in your username, and under that username field the password should be filled in ..... (the login dropdown : first field is for your username and the second field is for your password). 'Hope I made it a bit more clear ......

Sorry, still perplexed. When I click on the username field in the Password Manager under "Saved Logins", I just get a pane that shows

Copy Username Edit Username --- Copy Password Edit Password

If I'm supposed to click on the username field in the login saving prompt box, that's nice, except the issue is that I don't get presented with the login saving prompt box. That's the problem.

I didn't see you mention that before - maybe I missed it  ?

Would you please take a look at this article (again) - especially the section :

Remember Password prompt is not displayed

Does this help (fingers crossed ... )  ?

Sorry, "refuses to save it" meant that it refuses to ask me to save it!

I have looked at that "Usernames and passwords are not saved" link pretty hard.

Exceptions - none Private browsing - no Password manager software - just the standard FF Manager Graphic driver won't display prompts - but yes, it does, for other users Websites prohibit - nope, my wife can save hers on this website

I should add ... I see that I'm supposed to cntl-click on the username box when I'm logging into the website. It's THAT username box. I see my wife's login as a default there, but not mine. When I cntl-click on my wife's name in that box, I get the "Fill Login" selection, but only her login is displayed. I enter my login name and password, replacing hers, and I log in fine, but it doesn't offer to save my username and password!

Those are two different things - thank you fro clearing that up.

And you and your wife (and 'other users') are using the same device  ?
The 'Remember Password' prompt is displayed for them, but not when you try to login (on that same device)  ?

Yes, my wife and I use the same device. We don't mind if the other can log into our credit card accounts! Same OS login (it's a family login).

For this account, her account login and password is remembered (she got the Remember Password prompt, and said YES!) I do not get that prompt.

I guess we haven't tried erasing her login, and see if that enables mine to be remembered. As in, maybe it only wants to remember one login (which makes no sense).

Certainly worth a try ....

It would make sense if you both use the same username, which of course you don't.

Did you ever saved and removed a password for this website?

Do you see more than one presence of this domain in logins.json if you check this file in a Firefox tab or in a plain text editor?

The file is in JSON format, so easiest is to use the builtin JSON viewer.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

As I said, my wife has her login for this website saved on this Firefox account. So yes, the website in question allows passwords and logins to be saved. It's MY login that it doesn't want to save.

The logins.json file does have an entry for this website. Of course, the Password Manager is just displaying that file, and I can see my wife's login on the Password Manager.

That would be hard with different credit card accounts. Still no answers?

Weirder things have happened - same device, same website .....

It was just a stab in the dark.

Still no answers?

I'm all out of ideas - keeping my fingers crossed that somebody else will come to your rescue  !

I just encountered a similar problem with a website that FF had previously saved the login and password. For whatever reason it picked up a wrong login and password. I deleted both and entered the correct login and password but now FF does not offer to save them. I had a similar problem in Chrome with the same web site, but, Chrome is saving the login and password. I'm not in private browsing mode or anything else. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem? Thanks
