Why does the website ESPNcricinfo use too much CPU?

When visiting a Live Match commentary page at the ESPNcricinfo website, my CPU escalates (50-70%) and does not drop. The CPU can jump when visiting other new sites or content-heavy sites, but it will drop down once loaded.

When I open a new tab, and the ESPNcricinfo Live Match continues to run (I can see the score change in the tab) in a background tab, the CPU will drop back down. But the moment I click on the tab it will sky rocket again.

I have the latest version of Firefox. I have tried preventing accessibility services from accessing my browser, using hardware acceleration, and changing the content process limit. I have also restarted in Safe Mode and tried with each add-on one by one. CPU performance is worse in Safe Mode.

The Firefox application is usually around 30-50% but a Firefox CP Web Content process can use 70-90%. With the add-ons it will stay around 50-60%. If I keep the page open it will eventually overheat my laptop.

Finally, I have tried accessing the page in Safari (version 8) with default settings and there is no CPU problem. So, I can certainly view the ESPN cricinfo Live Matches from that browser but it would be good to know the issue for future reference.

Hi, so a 100megs of ram for Extensions being used.

I would think it is your Video Card Drivers. As nothing came for us to look at about them can say if any are corrupted or not. Firefox likes drivers in good shape to perform best.

Some sites can cause that especially live sites as it is video intensive. So old drivers can do that also, update them if you can.

Can try : SAFE MODE next time watching the site and see what happens.

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
  • default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder)
  • default toolbar layout is used (file: localstore-safe.rdf)
  • Javascript JIT compilers are disabled (prefs: javascript.options.*jit)
  • hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected

TEST''''is issue still there ?

I may not have the latest Video Card drivers as my MacOS is not the latest version, but it sounds like a lot of effort to view a website (with no videos) functionally. Guess I will have to use Safari for now.

Try removing the content-prefs.sqlite file in your profile folder as described in Firefox uses too much memory or CPU resources - How to fix.

Also, have you tried creating a new profile to see how that performs?

Sorry, I forgot to mention I have removed the content-prefs.sqlite file. No noticeable difference.

I will probably try Refresh/Reinstall and see what happens.

I upgraded my OS (all my drivers) and did a fresh install of Firefox but couldn't find any improvement.

If I run the add-on NoScript the CPU will drop to 30%. However, on these settings I must manually refresh the website and much of the content is lost.

It would seem some script is using a lot of CPU resources based on my FF and OS setup.

Hi, yes it does. Let Virustotal.com have a scan just in case of a miner script in the page.

It maybe that Firefox is doing it's best with that script which maybe malformed and is why FIrefox does that. The other Browsers are not as strict with content as they should be and seem to not follow the rules of the W3C.org who is in charge of standards and practises for web pages and web browsers.

If have the URL and it is a public one we can take a look and see what is causing the issue and if there is something that can be done now or in the future.

Virus scan shows no problems.

The website is www.espncricinfo.com. However the issue is not with the site's front page but with any Live Matches. I can't provide a permanent URL but the live matches are listed at the top of the URL I provided.

If it is Live Content it is your Video Card and or Drivers and or your Ram or combination of both.

    • Update or reinstall your drivers ad no information was provided.
  • Put a tick in the box the setting to Prevent Accessibility Services from accessing your browser.

Move to esr if low ram and old system.

Firefox Extended Release Version : Firefox ESR does not come with the latest features but it has the latest security and stability fixes.

If do please :
