When trying to go to my bank's site, an entry appears in the url drop down box that is suspiciously similar to my bank's address and I want to delete it. The instructions that I found in Firefox help do not work (i.e. highlight it using only the cursor, then hit delete or control delete or shift delete. I am using Firefox 97.0.1 (64-bit) with Windows 10.

Is there a new way to do this?

Shift+Delete should remove a suggestion from your history, but may not work on other types of suggestions.

When does it appear? For example:

If you do not need to type anything in the bar for the suggestion to appear in the drop-down:

This is a Shortcut on the Firefox Home / new tab page. To remove a shortcut, you need to use the editing tools on that page instead of in the drop-down. More info: Customize items on your Firefox New Tab page.

If the text appears directly in the bar instead of on the drop-down:

Removing this kind of "autofill" suggestion is a little trickier, so let me know if you are seeing that.

If the text appears with a star over the lower right corner of the site icon:

This is a bookmark. You can search for it in the Bookmarks Sidebar (Ctrl+B) or Library window (Ctrl+Shift+O as in Organizer) and delete it there.

If I missed something...

Please tell me more about when/how it appears.

Sorry, just to clarify, Shift+Delete works on the item selected using the down arrow key to highlight it. You can't use the mouse for that.

You can remove all data stored in Firefox for a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History -> Show All History" or "View -> Sidebar -> History").

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox for this domain like history and cookies and passwords and exceptions and cache, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data for that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of involved files.

If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data for that website will be saved once again.
