global message index reconstruction not working in Thunderbird

I am not any longer able to search my messages, and following the available instruction simply does not work - multiple mail accounts, mostly IMAP - previous incomplete index 500 Mb (not the 1.5 GB I read of somewhere) - tried know tips & trick a few times (canceling DB.... reindexing hangs up ... and that's it could somebody help me out? thanks Antonio P.S. italian version of thunderbird... but i can move to the english one if that is the problem P.S. II ... problem started 1.5 years ago... do not remember versio

What do you mean by "reindexing"? Did you quit Thunderbird, delete the file global-messages-db.sqlite in the profile folder and restart Thunderbird? Creating the new global-messages-db.sqlite may take hours if you have many messages in many folders in many accounts. Maybe that's why you think it "hangs up". You can follow the indexing processus by opening the Activity Manager window via the Tools menu. Does TB really get unresponsive (hang up) or do you get an error message?
