i'm using 3.6.16, i think. i downloaded 4.0 in response to your popup ad. when i try to replace 3.16 in the applications folder, i'm told i don't have the authority to change some of the items. (if an exact quote is required, get back to me.) this has happened every time i've tried to do it even though i've trashed version 4.0 and downloaded it fresh.

all this on an imac less than a year old.

If you get an error message that you do not have sufficient permissions or if you have problems with updating then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

  • Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
  • Install the new version that you have downloaded

Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.

thanks, cor-el. simple stuff for you, but i was stymied. (also, a tip of the hat for seeing that 'authority' was 'permissions.'

We see this issue a lot from users who update from Firefox 3.6 to Firefox 4.
It seems that the Firefox 3.6 application has been installed with system or administrator permissions and not with user permissions for the files.
It is possible to repair the permissions of those files, but why do that if there is no further need for those files and they have to be replaced any way.
