If every other character looks like garbage, then it could be a problem converting between Unicode and ANSI/ASCII text (Unicode uses two bytes for each character while ANSI/ASCII uses one).

Is this problem in your webmail (e.g., Windows Live Hotmail, Yahoo! mail, Gmail, Outlook Web Access), or in Thunderbird? The answer might be specific to your particular webmail provider or email client software.
