last week firefox kept freezing and would not reload without a reboot of my system. i shut down my computer and just restarted it and now i am having issues with my system asking if i want to let firefox make changes to my computer (norton 360) i say yes and it takes me straight to Norton Safe Web site for a tour. I have the norton tool bar it all looks the same but none of my logins or cards etc are in the vault anymore. What's going on? It also doesn't take me to my google home page it takes me to the norton tour page.

Try the Firefox Safe Mode to see how it works there. The Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open the Firefox 4.0+ Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or use the Help menu item and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Don't select anything right now, just use "'Start in Safe Mode" To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shift key) to open it again. If it is good in the Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.

Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

As iamjayakumars said, many times third party add-ons or plug-ins can cause problems. IMO, i prefer to steer clear of any unnecessary ones.

You can disable add-ons one at a time (this will require a reboot) to isolate a potential culprit. Tools/Add-ons.

For plug-ins, you can type "about:plugins" in the url address bar. This will display a list of all plug-ins and names. Copy the name of the dll file associated with each plug-in and a simple search of your directory will reveal the location. You can just rename the plug-in with a bak extension that will disable them instead of deleting them directly from your search results. (ie. NPSWF32_11_5_502_135.dll.bak) Restart firefox and if the problem is not resolved you can re-enable and move on to another, while also removing the "bak" extension from the previous to re-enable.

On a side note: numerous add-ons and plug-ins will affect the performance of your browser, disabling add-ons when unnecessary for use is a good habit or avoiding excessive add-ons all together IMO is better. One reason is for performance and another is it makes it easier to troubleshoot a problem.
