The preview area is called the Message Pane. You can turn the message pane on and off using either:

  • F8 key
  • tap the Alt key to display the classic menu bar > View menu > Layout > Message Pane

I don't know why I can't find this in the new (3-bar) menu. It's got to be somewhere.
