I use Firefox as my preferred browser. I have been using Firefox 35 and recently updated to 36. Yahoo! Mail is my email provider. Every day, for weeks, when I first boot up my computer, when I open Yahoo! Mail and login, Yahoo! Mail freezes. To get it to unfreeze, I have to hold down CTRL and ALT and press DEL, more than once, to get to the screen where I can choose to enter Task Manager. Instead, when I click on CANCEL, Yahoo! Mail unfreezes. This only happens when I boot up the computer and try to log into Yahoo! Mail fresh.

I have read both Firefox and Yahoo! suggestions for eliminating what might be the causing problem: clearing the cache, deleting cookies, disabling add-ons, temporarily disabling the anti-virus software (I use AVG), etc.. None of them have worked. I have read both Firefox problem solver and Yahoo! problem solver comments stating the problem is the other service. I do see that others who use IE, Chrome, and Safari have had similar problems with Yahoo! Mail.

I am tired of this. What can be done to fix this problem? I have also posted my problem for Yahoo! Mail problem solvers.

Problem with Firefox and Yahoo! Mail seems to be fixed. What I did:

After looking about other forums and help sites for what may solve my problem, I picked up on one suggestion: Update the graphics display driver for my computer.

NOTE: Before I did any downloading of anything new, I created a System Restore Point, so that I could "undo" any update. If anyone doesn't know how to do that, to save time and space, I won't write out the steps. I recommend you learn how to do that 1st.

I did that and downloaded an updated driver for my graphics display device.

I won't go through the steps for doing that here. I created a System Restore point, 1st. Then, I got the updated driver from the web site of the provider of my computer's graphics display device driver, AMD (Advanced Micro Devices.)

For anyone wishing to update their graphics display device and who does not know how to go about it, I suggest you go to what I consider a reputable computer help forum web site, MajorGeeks.com. (See more about MajorGeeks.com below.)

After I downloaded and installed an updated driver for my graphics display device, I closed out my computer and shut it down. I rebooted it, to see if I was no longer having the problem as I stated above in my initial post. I still had the problem. Dang!

But, then I thought perhaps the problem was also with my setting for Cookies for Firefox. Before I had updated the graphics display device driver, one of the many attempts I made to fix the problem was that I changed my Firefox Privacy settings so that I Always accepted Cookies from Third Party sites. Changing the setting from accepting Cookies only from Visited Sites. Making that change didn't seem to fix the problem, either, so I reset the Cookies setting to only accepting Cookies from Visited Sites.

With my graphics display device driver updated, I now went back to the Options (click on Tools) for Firefox and in the Privacy settings, chose Always for Accept Third Party Cookies.

I then closed out and and shut my computer down to see if the change for Cookies made the difference.

Now, I don't have the problem, right after starting up my computer and after connecting to the Internet, when I have first opened Firefox and go to Yahoo! Mail. The full connection to Y!M isn't instantaneous, however. I counted for about 20 seconds (1 and 2 and 3 and . . . ) before the full Yahoo! Mail displayed and it "unfroze."

Note: I have my Firefox to remove all cookies when I close Firefox. I suspect some of the slowness at initial startup and logging into Yahoo! Mail has to do with the Cookies being removed when I closed Firefox and shut my computer down.

Are you having the problem only with that one site?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

1. Correction to my mis-spelling: *problem*

2. I have been having the problem only with Yahoo! Mail.

3. After trying your suggestion, before I could even get to the Yahoo! Mail page, the Yahoo! home page froze. I had to use the CTRL + ALT + DEL method to get to the Task Manager option so I could click on CANCEL and just get to the Yahoo! Home Page.

4. Now, to add to my aggravation I am stuck with the "new look" Yahoo! home page . . . which I HATE!!!

5. So, now I have 2 issues - the "new look" Yahoo! home page which I can't seem to change back to the home page look I liked AND the Yahoo! Mail freeze.

Honestly, even tho' I was raised to be polite and say "thank you," I just can't in this case.

Update

This morning, after booting up my computer, connecting to the Internet, and bringing up my Yahoo! home page in Firefox 36, I see that I have my preferred version of the Yahoo! home page back. I have my Firefox preferences set to clearing cookies and browsing history when I close Firefox, so something which made the Yahoo! home page (a cookie, I guess) got cleared out. Whew!.

However, the problem of Yahoo! Mail freezing in Firefox (I have the latest version) when I initially log into it is still there and I have to use the CTRL + ALT + DEL method to get to the Task Manager choice screen to click Cancel, so that Yahoo! Mail unfreezes.
