Can't get new message to "Unbold" unless I open them

Here is my problem:

Until last Tuesday, when I clicked on a new message, it was immediately marked as "read" by unbolding. Now, when I click on a message it remains bolded, and appears to be "unread" unless I actually go in and read it.

I have checked and unchecked "Automatically Marked as Read"; I have checked and unchecked "Immediately on Display" and have also set it to a time interval. (btw, this was an answer I saw to someone who wrote a similar message....I found it via Google, but I have no idea how he got in to ask a question)

NOTHING works and I am at my wits end.

Thanks for any answer, except the "Go to these FAQ or Help files". Obviously, I am already doing what those Help Files stated, yet, for some reason WITHOUT CHANGING ANYTHING, I can no longer do what I used to do.

Would it help to uninstall/reinstall? Would it save my contacts, msgs, etc?
