When I try to search for an email, whether I use the person's name or email or partial name or partial email address, nothing comes up. I know they are there because I can find them manually, but it is more time consuming and inconvenient.

Please provide more details. How exactly do you search?

I type in the person's name, partial name, email, or partial email in the "filter these messages" bar above the email list.
