When I use Ctrl-T to open a new tab, a new tab indeed opens--so far, so good--but ALSO a new tab in a new window opens! Any thoughts?

This is happening for no apparent reason. I have not made any recent changes to Firefox settings.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Did you install the New Tab Override, or another that does this? Check their settings.

Thanks for your responses. The problem now seems to have gone away. Just a temporary glitch, I guess.
