I have been using Thunderbird since Dec 25th, and now I've been getting a "processing account" error message since Dec. 30

I downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird on December 25th and had been successfully using it until December 30th. I had no issues with the program between those dates. Since December 30th, every time I open the program, I get an error message reading:

"error: This account, (name of my aol email account), is being processed. Please wait until this process is complete before you get messages".

My emails are all on the aol server, and I can SEND a message through Thunderbird, but can't download them onto my computer using Thunderbird. I'm using version 38.5.0 on Windows 10. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What anti virus are you using?

avast. Free version. I've used both programs together for YEARS on others systems. But this was a new (used) desktop purchase that I put both programs on.

what can I say, this new version of avast is not very friendly, but there are documented issues going back over 10 years, Have a look here https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#AVAST

I suggest you create an exception in avast for your Thunderbird Profile Folder

Thanks Matt. I'll give it a try. I haven't had this issue before, and as I've said, I use the same two programs with up to date versions on a laptop with no issue. (Different email provider though). I was pretty taken when I saw the message because I've never had an issue with these programs before, and was more worried about a possible virus. First time for everything I guess. I appreciate the help and guidance to a solution!!
