A message sent last night has appeared in the inbox 20 times, and other mail has been blocked. An almost identical message sent before this one was received OK, but that one appeared twice Two other almost identical messages sent from the same source at the same time have not been received. All these messages contained attachments with photographs in jpg format. I can use another email client to receive incoming messages.

My guess is your anti virus is dickering with the attachments, the server is getting no message that the download completed and so sends them again.

Try disabling any anti virus email scanner.

Thanks Matt. I came to a similar conclusion and used web based mail to delete the offending email from the server. That solved the problem, but I'm no nearer understanding why it happened.

If you ever get to understand the vagarities of anti virus programs you will be doing much better than I have ever managed. I know they cause problems, I even have vague understandings of why. What usually fails me is understanding why they are designed to do the basically stupid things they sometimes do when they hit an error.
