I changed computers, and in the transfer, a file named "Thunderbird 5.0 (en-US) - 2011-08-19.pcv" was saved. How do I open it with my newly downloaded Thunderbird? Or am I out of luck in recovering those emails?

If I recall correctly. PCV files are created by mozbackup. So I guess you install mozbackup and run it to restore the backup you made.
