Sounds like something went wrong. You will probably need to reset the update configuration:

Delete the following files:
active-update.xml
updates.xml
The updates folder and its contents

On Mac Firefox saves a pending update in the hidden Caches folder location. MAC: ~/Library/Caches/Mozilla/updates/Applications/Firefox/updates/

In Mac OS X v10.7 and later, the ~/Library folder is a hidden folder.
