A few days ago when I opened Thunderbird the UI started flickering and partly disappearing. All in all the application becomes completely unusable because 99% of the UI instantly disappears completely (see the screenshots) and only some parts flicker when I move the cursor over where they should be. It seems to be related to visual updates because upon initial startup (where I always see some kind of dialog unrelated to the problem) everything looks fine but after I close the dialog and move the mouse over the window, the glitches start happening.

I already uninstalled Thunderbird and re-installed it in a different directory (version 64.4.0 but other versions seem to have the same issues), removed my profile (from the appdata directory and the profiles.ini; yes, I kept a backup) and renamed the entire appdata/Thunderbird directory but nothing seems to solve the problem. Is there some way to restore everything to how it was before? If not, how can I get Thunderbird at least working normally again?

try restarting in safe mode. It is on the help menu as "restart with add-ons disabled" but it can also be invoked by holding the shift key while you click to start Thunderbird.

Just tried it but safe mode didn't solve the problem either.
