When I receive a PDF via email with an online link for it I receive an error stating the file cannot be downloaded and to save the file. There's no option to save it in the emails but if I copy the link and use a Chrome based browser the email link works fine.

You made no mention of this : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/applications-panel-set-how-firefox-handles-files Please check the settings for PDF and Click it to change it.
