emails are disappearing from my inbox
our computer is deleting large quantities of emails (hundreds) without being told to. no one can find the deleted messages in any of our trash folders. where are the messages going? how do i retrieve them? and how do i stop my computer from doing this anymore?

usually when a question like this appears it is because the mail provider is deleting old mail through their retention policy and the account is IMAP. Have you checked your providers retention policy?

my provider has told me that this is not the case.
Do you get mail from that account on another device, like your phone and have it set to delete mail more than say a month old? IMAP is synchronized so decisions on one device are reflected on ALL of them
yes. it also goes to my phone, but i do not have it set to automatically delete emails. also, it is not old emails that are disappearing, they are sometimes less than 1 day old
but do you press delete on your phone? that is a sure way to get rid of them using IMAP.
NO. WE DO NOT DELETE THEM FROM THE CELLPHONE
