When I try to add a new email account to Thunderbird, I get a message that it cannot login to my hotmail email because I have cookies disabled. I have tried enabling cookies in my Firefox browser, but I get the same message.

Found the answer on my own. The answer was the same as for trying to add gmail... update thunderbird settings to allow cookies.

You're getting the error message in Thunderbird, so it's in Thunderbird where you have to enable the cookies, not in Firefox. I think the following article is relevant to you and you'll find there the instructions to enable cookies in Thunderbird as requested:
