I cannot see any folders, and consequently any e-mails, in any of my email accounts. All I get when I log in are the mail accounts that I have. If I try to open a sub folder in that account, e.g. Inbox, I am told that it already exists. I cannot expand the account to view the emails that I have.

How to fix this issue.

P.S. it is no good sending me an e-mail as I won't be able to see it. You can try an alternate email mick.esdivers@gmail.com

It's difficult to imagine what you are describing in your messages. Can I show us a screen shot of your Thunderbird main window such as it appears when you launch TB
