If the Clear Recent History item is grayed then you are probably in Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode

  • You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
  • To see all History settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
  • Uncheck: [ ] "Automatically start Firefox in a private browsing session"

DOH!! I must be insane because I just went to try this again and this time the option was NOT grayed out!! I suspected it was grayed out because I actually did not have anything in my Form & Search History to purge. So I went ahead and purged everything and checked again. And behold! The option was grayed out again!
