how do I get Firefox to show bookmarks in a permanent, vertical column on left side of the screen?
IE allows me to bookmark my favorites and keep them listed in a vertical column on the left side of the screen--which I keep open at all times. Is that function possible in Firefox?

I'm not sure about vertical but you can have permanent bookmark tool bar horizontally by R click empty tab area then tick next to bookmark toolbar and there you GO ! Then when you create anew bookmark just select bookmark toolbar in the folder option and you done ! Hope this is a help .

To open the Bookmarks sidebar, in the View menu select Sidebar and then Bookmarks. Alternatively use the keyboard shortcut Control+B
There's also a Bookmarks toolbar button that you can retrieve from the Customize palette.

The above responses DO NOT indicate how to keep the bookmark sidebar open on a permanent basis. This is entirely frustrating & time consuming to keep having to re-open it. I will most probably have to delete mozilla firefox & go back to internet explorer because of this unless someone can get me an answer that solves this problem immediately!
Use ctrl+b to open the side bar.> file / exit to close firefox.> Restart computer [start / shutdown / restart / ok] open firefox as usual bookmarks side bar should be pinned to left of window worked for me - hope it helps.
