Dear Firefox,

I am looking for a character counter for emailing. This link use to work. It was for a small add on that counts the number of characters in any text. It's purpose is to allow you to email text messages and not exceed the 140 character limit. The link no longer works. It is the first link on the search page. http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&=&q=character+counter+1.4&aq=0p&aqi=p-p2g8&aql=&oq=character

Thank you.

Mozilla recently tightened the rules for add-ons that are available on the add-ons site. To appear on the site add-ons must undergo at least a preliminary security review. Mozilla emailed developers who had add-ons that had not been reviewed advising them that they would need to request a review if the add-on was to remain on the site. Those that did not request a review had their add-ons disabled/removed from the add-ons site.

I have not been able to find any trace of this add-on elsewhere and the developer does not appear to have their own home page. You may be out of luck trying to find this one.

Tony, Thank you for the reply. The counter still works on my computers that I down loaded it to. I use it when I email a cell phone that has a character limit.

I tried looking for the file on my hard drive but could not find it??? I searched the whole computer using the phrase, "counter" or, "character," but no luck. Any ideas on how to find the file in my computer, please?

Thank you.

Open the \extensions\ folder in your Profile and look for the folder for that extension.

Here's a character count bookmarklet by one of the Mozilla developers as a side project.
https://www.squarefree.com/bookmarklets/forms.html#character_count

Drag the "button" into your bookmarks to save it. When you get to a page with a text area click on that bookmarklet, and every text area on that page will get a green zero in the lower left corner. As you type that number will be instantly updated. Works fine for me in this forum in the "post a reply" box on Firefox 3.5.15.

Dear edmeister,

Thank you for the info. I found Charcter Counter in my extensions but there was no .exe file so even if I copy that folder onto an USB drive and then copy it onto a different computer I still don't know how to enable the program.

The character count bookmarklet works fine in this, "Post a Reply," dialog box but it does not work in gmail which is what I want a character counter for. Thank you.

It's not a "program" that installs with a Windows executable, it's a Firefox extension. Firefox uses an XPI package for extensions, which works on all platforms.

Assuming that folder is named charactercount@zac or something similar, after you copy that folder add .xpi to it and when you go to install it into the other Firefox installation use File > Open File.
It's been awhile since I have done that myself, but IIRC that does work,

Another way would be to drop that folder into the \extensions\ folder on the other PC and delete the following files in the Profile folder, which will force Firefox to rebuild those files when you start it.
extensions.cache
extensions.ini
extensions.rdf
compatibility.ini

Dear Ed,

It worked. All I did was copy the folder, "charactercounter@zac," from the first computer --> USB Drive--> 2nd computer. I put the folder in the correct users/mike/appdata/roaming/mozilla/firefox/profiles/ssaoma10.Mike Work/extensions directory as you specified. I did not need to add an .xpi at the end. Firefox automatically installed the add on.

I am now counting characters on the this computer.

TYVM.

Best Wishes,

Mike
