An after thought - I have a Beta version of FF installed and on reflection it may have started after installation of this FF4 Beta although I am using 3.6.15 where this problem arises.

You can run into all sorts of problems when you switch back and forth between different versions of Firefox while using the same Profile for both.

Create a new profile exclusively for the 4.0 beta version and create a desktop shortcut with -P "profile" appended to the target to launch that profile.
