I saved my mozilla bookmarks from a previous pc to disk. When i try to import them my option is importing from IE, not from a file.

It depends on the format the bookmarks are in.

If they are in JSON format, use the restore procedure shown here - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Backing+up+and+restoring+bookmarks (this method will replace any bookmarks that already exist with those from the backup)

If they are in HTML format, use this procedure - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Importing+Bookmarks+from+an+HTML+File (this method will add the bookmarks from the backup to any that already exist). In that article it refers to "Organize Bookmarks", in Firefox 4 the equivalent is "Show All Bookmarks"

If you have copied the places.sqlite file, you can copy that to the current profile, this will replace the bookmarks and history. for details on how to find the profile folder see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Profiles
