When trying to bookmark a new site, my dropdown bookmark menu only shows 5 folders. I have many more, but they aren't showing up. I can view them on a sidebar, but I can't put a bookmark into all of them. Why?
All of my folders are listed in my bookmarks menu. I can see them, and I can open them for access to previously bookmarked sites. What I can't do is make them appear-- all of them-- when I try to bookmark a new site and put it into my folders. Only 5 folders (they appear to be random ones) show up in the dropdown menu. This is a recent change.

Would you see if closing Firefox and reopening Firefox fixes you problem. The bookmarks menu is not kept as current as your actual bookmarks, particularly if you make multiple changes.
If that does not work, then backup your entire profile, with Firefox down, just in case. I know you know you should have this anyway, but you would want to make sure you actually have a current backup.
Next with Firefox up: create a bookmarks backup file, then restore it still with Firefox up. this goes very fast. Check your bookmarks.
If that doesn't work try fix for Corrupt localstore.rdf
Still have a problem, see
Also make sure that you see the full folder list by either clicking on the Choose button or by clicking the arrow at the far right of the folder line.

Thanks, Cor-el! I tried both, but neither worked. I still just got the 5 folders as before.

Thank you, dmcritchie! I have done the first 3 options you mention and will tackle the next two soon. I figure I can always bookmark sites as "unsorted" (that still is an option) and then open a sidebar and click-and-drag the unsorted bookmark into the folder I want. So it takes two steps instead of one to get a new bookmark into a folder. Big deal, and I feel a little silly for complaining, but it bothers me that all the folders don't appear on the bookmarks menu drop-down as they should when I try to bookmark a new site. It should work (and it used to), but now it doesn't. And it seems weird that this problem arose only a day or two ago.

Did you try to force Firefox to rebuild places.sqlite?
A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
